On June 22, 2023, the American Society of Civil Engineers Hawaii Section, American Water Works Association – Hawaii Section, and HWEA hosted the June 2023 joint dinner meeting at Hale Ikena, Fort Shafter featuring guest speaker, Roger Babcock Jr., Ph.D., P.E. Babcock is a past president of both ASCE Hawaii Section and HWEA who currently serves as the Director of the Department of Environmental Services for the City and County of Honolulu. His presentation covered ongoing efforts in wastewater operations and upgrades including the status of secondary upgrades at Honouliuli and Sand Island, upgrades planned for Waianae, Kailua, and Wahiawa, as well as pump stations and the collection system. He also covered ongoing efforts related to the city’s stormwater program, which included the proposed storm water utility and One Water Program. Roger also briefly discussed the department’s plans and goals for the 2024 fiscal year and highlighted efforts to increase staffing and support across the entire department.
