Every year, HWEA has the honor of judging science fairs across Hawaii, all of which lead to the pinnacle event: the Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair (HSSEF).
Organized by the Hawaii Academy of Science, the HSSEF celebrates and encourages scientific inquiry and innovation statewide. Geared towards fostering interest and involvement in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields, the fair provides a platform for students from elementary to high school levels to present their research projects and discoveries.
State winners have the opportunity to further showcase their work by participating in the Stockholm Junior Water Prize national competition, hosted at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, CO. This all-expense-paid trip is sponsored by state member associations (like HWEA), allowing winners to compete against each other for a chance to advance to the international competition in Stockholm, Sweden.
HWEA has selected Vera Wang from Kaiser High School, whose project is titled “Constructing a Novel Aquatic Microplastic Filtration Device Utilizing Natural, Biodegradable Materials.”
Vera’s success is just the beginning, and HWEA is committed to supporting and empowering passionate young leaders like her who will create solutions for a better tomorrow.
The SJWP national competition was held on June 20-23, 2024.
